The Full Story

A Journey of Resilience and Healing

Dr. Jeremy Hughes’ path to chiropractic care began at just five years old after a life-altering car accident. His mother, recognizing the power of chiropractic treatment, took him to a chiropractor—a decision that would shape his future. Chiropractic care became a vital part of his life, helping him recover from the physical demands of martial arts, snowboarding, BMX racing, and weightlifting.

But his true test came in 2006. After a routine night of teaching karate, an unexplained accident left him with devastating injuries— he had suffered a fractured femur, requiring the insertion of a titanium rod, a broken scapula, three broken ribs, and three fractured transverse processes in his lumbar spine. His truck had crashed through a concrete freeway sound wall, nearly splitting in half. Doctors worked to rebuild his body, but it was chiropractic care that helped him heal. His chiropractor made house calls, using gentle techniques until Dr. Hughes was strong enough to visit the office. With consistent chiropractic treatment, he regained mobility and strength.

By 2012, he had fulfilled his dream of becoming a chiropractor, returning to the very clinic that had treated him as a child—this time, as a doctor.

But life had another challenge in store. That same year, exhaustion led to another accident—this time with severe neurological consequences. Doctors told his mother he would never be the same and would likely need lifelong assistance. He spent a month in the ICU before being released into her care.

Refusing to accept that fate, Dr. Hughes sought out Functional Neurology after a year of standard chiropractic care. The results were life-changing—within a month, he was back in practice. Inspired by his recovery, he pursued 300+ hours of postdoctoral training in Functional Neurology, integrating this approach into his chiropractic practice.

Today, Dr. Hughes helps patients restore balance in their bodies and minds, using the same methods that gave him his life back.

Connect with Chiropractic Science

The word subluxation comes from the Latin word to dislocate (luxare) and somewhat or slightly (sub). So the term “vertebral subluxation” literally means a slight dislocation (misalignment) of the bones. This can apply to all the bones of the spine as well as the shoulders, hips, knees, elbows, wrists ext.

What truly differentiates doctors of chiropractic from any other healthcare professionals is the fact that chiropractors are the only professionals who are trained to diagnose and treat what are called “Subluxations.”

There are three causes of subluxation; trauma, chemical disparity, and neurological imbalance. To cause a trauma based subluxation an individual may have an incident such as a slip and fall, a motor vehicle accident, a sports injury or even the simple act of holding an incorrect position for an extended period of time such as sitting or sleeping in a position that is not ergonomically correct . If the individual is toxic or has a chemical imbalance the nerve connection from the organs to the brain will result in a muscular imbalance that will cause a subluxation complex. And lastly, and unbeknownst to many, an imbalance in the frequency of firing (the function) of the different sides of the brain will result in a muscular and postural disparity that will cause multiple subluxations.

The body's muscles hold the bones in place, and because all muscles are controlled by the brain, any functional imbalance in the brain can lead to a pattern of subluxations. Correcting these misalignments can, in turn, influence the brain's activity. This effect can be assessed through a comprehensive functional neurological exam, in addition to the standard physiological chiropractic exam.

Thus, when the neurology of the brain is balanced and the joints are in the proper position the muscles will fire at 100% and have full strength and function throughout their entire range of motion. This is the goal at The Cortex Chiropractic, proper structural and neurological balance.

Chiropractic care goes beyond simply enhancing flexibility and increasing range of motion.

Chiropractic care is about neurological balance, function and strength!!
